Primarily there are two types of trailing suction hopper dredgers: - aggregate dredger, suitable for the extraction of sand and gravel at sea for the purpose of building materials - maintenance/capital dredger, performing continuous operations to keep existing water channels and harbours navigable and to support new civil engineering works, such as the expansion of canals and creating new land.
