The IHC Beaver series is the most widely used standard cutter suction dredger in the world. Beavers are built to a proven design, spare parts are widely available, and many types are modular, so they can be transported by road or as deck cargo and assembled on site. That makes a used IHC Beaver one of the most liquid dredgers on the second-hand market.

How does a cutter suction dredger work?

A CSD works from a fixed position and relies on three main components:

• Cutter head: a rotating head at the end of the ladder loosens sand, clay or even rock.
• Dredge pump: the loosened material is sucked up and pumped through the dredger.
• Pipeline: a floating and shore pipeline carries the mixture directly to the reclamation or disposal area.

The dredger moves forward on its spud poles (or spud carriage) and swings from side to side using anchor winches. This allows accurate excavation and continuous production without stopping to unload, unlike a trailing suction hopper dredger.

What is the difference between a cutter suction dredger and a trailing suction hopper dredger?

A CSD works from a fixed position and pumps the material directly through a pipeline. A TSHD sails while dredging, stores the material in its own hopper and unloads it elsewhere. CSDs are better suited to hard soils and reclamation close to the dredging area.

Can a cutter suction dredger dredge rock?

Yes, with enough cutter power and a suitable cutter head. Heavy-duty CSDs are built specifically for rock and hard clay.

Can a used cutter suction dredger be transported?
