A deep suction dredger, also called a plain suction dredger, has no cutter: it sucks loose sand and gravel straight from the bottom through a long suction pipe and is used mainly for sand and gravel mining in deep pits and lakes. The dredger lies on anchors or winch wires above the deposit and lowers a suction pipe or ladder, often with a submerged pump, into the sand or gravel. The material flows towards the suction mouth as the slope of the pit gives way, and the dredge pump sends the mixture through a floating pipeline to the shore or a processing plant. The length of the ladder decides the maximum dredging depth; a submerged pump on the ladder allows deeper dredging than a pump on deck.
